Card Information
Your library card, or registration may be used at any public library
in Jefferson County. Please, take care of your library card — treat it
like a credit card.
You are responsible for any library materials borrowed on your card,
whether by you or by someone else. If you lose your card, or if you
change your name or address, notify your library immediately.

Borrowing
When you are ready to check out, take your materials and
library card to the circulation desk. Borrowing periods vary but
all library materials should be returned on or before the due
date. There is a late charge for each day overdue on each item.
Renewing
Library materials may be renewed in person,
online,
or by calling any public library in Jefferson
County. If you call to renew you must have your
library card number and the bar code number for each item you wish to
renew. Materials may be renewed one time. Some materials may not be
renewed at all.
Returning
Books may be returned to any public library in Jefferson County,
Alabama. They may be placed in a book drop or returned to the circulation desk.
Non-book materials
(audiocassettes, CD-ROMs, videocassettes, DVDS, and any other non-print
materials) may not be returned in a book drop unless the drop is
identified as an audio/visual or non-book drop.
Late Charges and Notices
Most items have late charges of $0.25 a day
with a total fine of $5.00. The main exception is videos. At most locations
videos have a late charge of $1.00 a day with a
total fine of $5.00. Each library sets its own late charges and total fines. The
item you have checked out may be different. Please contact the
owning library to make sure what the charges will be.
You will be sent an overdue notice for any
library materials not returned on time.
If the late charges are not paid when overdue materials are returned, those
charges will be billed to your card for payment later.
Late charges may be paid at any library.
Library Policies and Rules
The Jefferson County Library Cooperative (JCLC) is the umbrella
organization for the autonomous municipal libraries countywide. The
22 member libraries, which includes the Birmingham Public Library
System (Central Library and 18 branches), participate in the
Jefferson County Library Cooperative. There are 40 public library
locations in the county. Each municipal library has its own
policies, in addition to the JCLC policies. Please check with the
library you are using for more specific information. Staff members
of all libraries in Jefferson County, Alabama are eager to provide
library and information services that meet your needs.
